How have preparations progressed since Nigeria was announced as host?

Preparations have advanced steadily across competition planning, venue readiness, logistics, athlete services, and partnerships. Over 24 Commonwealth nations have already registered, and we are organizing a pre-championship international training camp in Lagos to unite athletes ahead of the competition.

Everything is moving in the right direction, and our focus is on delivering a world-class event that reflects Nigeria’s ability to host major international tournament.

What is the significance of Nigeria becoming the first African nation to stage the championships?

It is a truly historic moment. The Commonwealth Fencing Championships has never been staged in Africa, and Nigeria’s selection marks a milestone for the continent. The bid process was highly competitive, lasting more than ten months, and Nigeria triumphed over Australia, which houses the Commonwealth Fencing Federation headquarters. What makes it even more remarkable is that African Commonwealth nations united behind Nigeria, presenting a single continental bid. This reflects the confidence Africa has in Nigeria’s capacity to deliver.

What strategies are being employed to attract sponsorship?

Our strategy is to present the championships not just as a sporting event but as a platform for youth development, international engagement, and sports diplomacy. This creates opportunities for brands to associate with a historic milestone; the first Commonwealth fencing championships in Africa.

We are engaging organizations that share our vision, and partners such as Rugby School Nigeria, Flour Mills of Nigeria, and World Abilitysport have already pledged support.

The private sector has shown encouraging support, with institutions like Rugby School Nigeria and companies such as Flour Mills of Nigeria backing the championships. However, stronger government involvement is needed. Hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships is a milestone achievement, and we believe institutional support will help Nigeria maximize the opportunity and deliver a truly memorable event.
