Donald Trump wins US election in historic comeback

Donald Trump has been elected the 47th President of the United States, an extraordinary comeback for a former President who refused to accept defeat four years ago and survived two assassination attempts prior to the election.

President-elect Trump carved a path to victory by winning the swing states of North Carolina, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Georgia.

Describing it as a “magnificent victory”, the Republican told jubilant crowds in Florida: “America has given us an unprecedented and powerful mandate”
Meanwhile, Republicans have also taken the Senate back from Democrats after securing a string of crucial seats.
