Egypt to host U-20 Africa Cup of Nations following Cote d’Ivoire withdrawal
Determined to save its face from embarrassment, the Confederation Africaine de Football (“CAF”) has awarded the Egyptian Football Association (“EFA”) and Egyptian Government the rights to host the 2025 TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.
This follows the withdrawal of Fédération Ivoirienne de Football (“FIF”) and the Government of Côte d’Ivoire to host the championship, due to what they labelled as unforeseen circumstances.
The Egyptian Football Association and the Egyptian Government had previously submitted a bid to host the TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations 2025.
The opening match of the championship will be played on Sunday, 27 April 2025 and the Final on 18 May 2025.
Nigeria’s representatives, the Flying Eagles have been drawn in Group B alongside, Egypt, South Africa and Morocco.
Central African Republic, DR Congo, Ghana, Tanzania and Ivory Coast will all slug it out in Group A for the top two position that guarantees automatic qualification into the quarter-finals.
In Group C are Senegal, Zambia, Kenya and Sierra Leone.
The best two losers at the group state will also qualify for a place in the quarter-finals
