Ekiti sports boil as commissioner bars athletes, coaches from stadium

From Lanre Owolabi, Ado-Ekiti
It is uneasy calm in Ekiti sports community as the state’s Sports Commissioner, Michael Awopetu, this morning ordered the closure of Oluyemi Kayode stadium, Ado-Ekiti with armed policemen barricading the sports complex which equally houses offices of Ekiti State Sports Council.
The development which occurred this morning was as a result of a planned athletes protest allegedly scheduled to hold at the stadium today.
Investigations revealed that the coaches and athletes were scheduled to have a meeting with the Board and management of the sports council today, but a mole in the system reported to the Commissioner that the athletes would after the meeting embark on a protest.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, one of the aggrieved athletes said she was surprised that the sports commissioner decided to seal up the stadium. She added that the officials, coaches and athletes in the state are angry, hungry and disillusioned because of the bad athletes welfare and the terrible state of sports facilities.
She added that the despotic attitude of the sports Commissioner would not stop them from expressing their misgivings and complaints to the concerned authorities.
