Ex-goalkeeper needs N3m for artificial leg, wheelchair, after undergoing amputation

Former goalkeeper of the then University of Ife now known as Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Chike Ako Egbunu-Olimene is in dire need of N3m (three million naira only) to procure an artificial (prosthetic) leg, a wheelchair and other accessories.

Tayo Balogun, a veteran broadcaster and former course mate of the towering shot stopper told SportingLife that Egbunu-Olimene had recently undergone a leg amputation and needed the support of well meaning Nigerians to bounce back and live a life that will not necessarily make him become a burden to anyone in carrying out his daily activities.
In his active days as a footballer, Egbunu-Olimene was Great Ife’s goalkeeper in the mid 70s to the early 80s. With a height that reminded anyone of Emmanuel Okala,the then Enugu Rangers and Green Eagles goalkeeper.
Egbunu-Olimene was a real barricade to opposing attackers at the West African Universities Games (WAUG) in 1977 at which Ife won the soccer gold.
Upon graduation, he was employed by the university’s sports department.
“We are sad to inform the house that Chike has recently undergone a leg amputation related to diabetes.
“He is in serious need of facilities for rehabilitation, including an artificial (prosthetic) leg, a wheelchair and accessories estimated at N3 million (three million naira only).” said Balogun, who was also a footballer during his days at Great Ife but later veered into sports broadcasting at the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) until he retired.
