It has been excitement galore at the CBN Building Metal Workshop of the Government College Ibadan, venue of the ongoing GCIOBA 86/92 Closed Table Tennis Championship as the Ultimate House Showdown, the theme of the competition ends on Friday, November 7 with the semi-final and final taking place.
The competition which started on Wednesday November 5, with the official serve-off on Thursday, November 6, saw 40 students fighting it out across the five houses within the school with four of them qualifying for the semi-finals.
Powell House dominated the initial qualifiers with six of them making it to the Round of 16 with Field House and Grier producing three players each while only two each from Carr and Swantson House made it to the last 16.
Despite populating Round of 16, it was just one player from Powell House that made it to the semi-final with most of them losing out in the last 16.
The semi-final will see Samuel Olowoyeye (Grier) taking on Emmauel Ogundipe (Powell) in the first game while it will be the battle between Field and Swantson House as Lekan Alamoyo and Emmanuel Otunbobola take to the table.
One of the 1986 boys, Engr. Oluwakolade Aladeojebi, who was present at the venue to cheer the students described the championships as a pilot one for what to expect in the future as they are not going to make it a one off.
“We plan to be running this regularly and I want to appreciate the convener, Charles Olayinka and other members of the old students association for putting this together and this is like a test run for the future,” he said.
While declaring the tournament open, the Principal of the school, Solomon Oladokun, while appreciating the set for putting the championship together, urged the student to be good sportsmen while hoping the best student wins at the end of the day.
