After a successful conclusion of the South -West Closed Scrabble Tournament in Ile-Ife, Osun State last weekend, the zonal coordinator on the board of the Nigeria Scrabble Federation Engr. Monsur Akanbi has promised to organize two more championships this year.
This decision was motivated following a highly successful first edition where Bukunmi Afolayan of Ogun State won the title.
During an exclusive chat, Akanbi who was the immediate past chairman of the Lagos State Scrabble and Monopoly Association revealed that plans have already been activated to build on the impressive positives recorded from the edition held in Osun State.
He further revealed that one of the two editions will be closed and exclusive to students, residents and players from South-Western states of Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Oyo, Ekiti and Ondo while the other version will be open to all players and participants within and outside the country.
He disclosed that the next edition which will be a closed one will be held in Ogun state where players from the zone will converge for the best of scrabble spectacle.
The second will be more expansive and glamorous with a significant increase of prize-moneys.
He emphasised that leadership of the zone is being strategic at bringing students into the fold and nurture them into national and international stardom.
“We are grateful for all the successes recorded at the first edition of the South -West tournament held in Ile-Ife. I’m personally encouraged by the turnout especially with the number of students who attended. We had students from Obafemi Awolowo University, Fountain University and Benson Idahosa University.
I believe that is where our strength and focus should be considering the power of scrabble at expanding knowledge, fine-tuning strategies, calculations and offering life skills and of course monetary gains through prize money.
We are calling on educational institutions to join this journey of re-engineering scrabble development in the South-West zone.”
He thanked Najod Classics Services Limited for it’s support to the success of the last edition as he appealed to individuals and corporate organisations to partner with the zone on the driving development of scrabble in the South -West zone.
