Family raises alarm as hoodlums take over properties in Edo, petitions police for assistance
The Okokhune family has raised concerns regarding the takeover of their properties in Uromi by suspected hoodlums.
They have submitted a petition to the Edo State Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, regarding ongoing death threats from a land grabber named John Omioejie.
In a letter dated October 9, 2025, and signed by Barrister Friday Ekanem, Amos Okokhune detailed the situation in a complaint titled “Complaint of Malicious Damage, Vandalization, and Threat to Lives,” appealing for urgent intervention.
Amos Okokhune who authorized the petition said the problem has been ongoing since the death of his senior sister, Mrs. Cecilia Omiojie, who was shot dead along with her husband, Mr. Monday Omiojie, on 9th September 2022 at their residence, number 11 Old Police Station Road, Amendokahain, Uromi, Edo State, by unknown assailants.
“On Sunday, 5th October, suspected thugs in the company of John Omiojie allegedly stormed her late sister’s residence at 11 Old Police Station Road, Amendokahain, Uromi, in search of the deceased surviving Son.
“Failing to find him , they reportedly descended on the occupants at the residence, demanding property documents, and forcefully carted away some files.”
“After leaving there, they also came to my residence at 8 Poius Anini Street, along Amedokhain Road, Uromi, believing I was probably the one harboring Augustine, threatening us with guns and machetes, demanding that I should produce my nephew.”
John Omiojie has been threatening the first son of my sister, Augustine Omiojie. Augustine challenged him by taking legal action to reclaim his late parents’ properties, which include buildings, land, and animal farms that John has wrongfully claimed as his own.
“Augustine had to leave the country after a series of assassination attempts, which were traced to his uncle (John Omiojie) as the mastermind, because he approached the Court of law to seek legal action in recovering the properties left by his parents, but the attacks didn’t stop; hence, our plea to the Commissioner of Police to intervene by saving us from the land grabbers that are hell-bent on taking my sister’s properties,” the petition signed by Amos Okokhune states.
