FIBA Approves October 15, 2026 For New NBBF Elections

World’s basketball governing body, FIBA, has directed that elections to constitute a new board for the Nigeria Basketball Federation, should be held not later than October 15, 2026.

In the official letter signed by its Secretary General, Andreas Zaglis, and addressed to NBBF President Engr. Ahmadu Musa Kida, FIBA acknowledged receipts of petitions from various stakeholders regarding the governance of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) and the timing of its upcoming elections.

It reads in parts ‘As you are aware, since 2017 FIBA has closely monitored the governance issues of NBBF, which tend to become contentious during the election year.

‘Four years ago, these issues led to the withdrawal of your women’s national team from the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup and obliged FIBA to impose a disciplinary sanction on NBBF. It took FIBA ‘s intervention for the eventual normalisation of the situation in October 2022.’

Having considered the documentation on file, as well as previous experience, FIBA states;

(A) FIBA recognizes the current NBBF Board’s mandate until 15 October, 2026

(b) Elections for the NBBF governing bodies must take place after the conclusion of the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup (13 September 2026) and by no later than 16 October 2026, the newly elected NBBF Board shall start its mandate.

(c) FIBA will not recognize any amendments to the NBBF Statutes before the electoral process is completed. Therefore, the upcoming elections must be conducted under the current statutory framework and in compliance with the FIBA General Statutes and Internal Regulations.
