Gateway Games 2024: Team Ogun Claims Gold In Thrilling Female Handball Final

Host state, Ogun, wrapped up a thrilling handball campaign with a hard-fought 38–34 victory over Sokoto in the women’s final on Wednesday, sending the crowd at the Alake Sports Hall in Ijeja, Abeokuta, into wild celebrations.

In what was a pulsating encounter, Ogun edged the first half 18–17, but it was in the final minutes of the second half that they truly stamped their authority, pulling away from a resilient Sokoto side to seal the win and clinch the gold medal.

Buoyed by the support of the home fans, Ogun displayed grit, speed, and tactical discipline, with standout performances across the court. Sokoto, on their part, fought valiantly and matched their opponents goal for goal for large stretches of the game, but ultimately had to settle for silver.

Edo finished third following their 32-20 victory over Kogi in the third place match which was played on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Men’s final between Lagos and Ogun State was not concluded because of the heavy downpour and it will be completed on Thursday at 9am.
