Group expresses concern over increase in domestic violence
The Society Safety Network (SSN) has expressed worries about the increase in domestic violence incidents in Nigeria.
The non governmental organization called on all levels of government, traditional and religious institutions, civil society organizations, and the general public to work together to solve what it regards as a growing threat to families and national well-being.
In a statement, SSN Deputy Publicity Secretary Olalere Benedict voiced alarm over the rising acceptance of domestic abuse, particularly against women, children, and other vulnerable persons of the society.
He emphasized the significance of taking urgent and united effort to combat this trend. SSN referenced the terrible instance of Mrs. Hasanat Taiwo, whom her husband reportedly turned into a punching bag and narrowly escaped what is thought to be a ritual attempt arranged by him.
“We can no longer afford to dismiss domestic abuse as a personal issue. It is a criminal conduct, and its rising frequency becomes a national emergency.
“From physical and mental abuse to economic and sexual assault, the pattern is very unsettling, and justice is frequently delayed or denied. Victims require proper protection.”
The organization called for strict enforcement of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act, expansion of victim support infrastructure such as safe shelters, and sustained community-based education campaigns.
SSN also advocated for inclusion of domestic violence education in school curriculums and the regular training of law enforcement officers to handle cases with sensitivity and urgency.
“Domestic violence does not just harm individuals, it fractures the very foundation of our society. A nation cannot thrive when its homes have become unsafe.”
The group urged domestic violence survivors to speak out, assuring them of support.
It called on the media to elevate real-life stories, challenge harmful cultural narratives, and champion preventative advocacy.
