HFN President Commends Abia State Sports Council for successful hosting of National U-12/U-15 Handball Championship
President of the Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN), Samuel Ocheho, has commended the Abia State Sports Council for its invaluable partnership in hosting the just-concluded National U-12 and U-15 Handball Championship in Umuahia.
The championship, which ran from March 18 to 28, 2025, was a resounding success, showcasing the immense talents of young handball players from across the country.
Ocheho expressed his deep appreciation to the Abia State Government, the Commissioner for Sports, and the leadership of the Abia State Sports Council for their unwavering commitment to the development of grassroots handball in Nigeria.
“We are extremely grateful to the Abia State Sports Council for their collaboration and dedication in making this championship a reality.
“Their support ensured a seamless and well-organized tournament, providing a platform for young athletes to hone their skills and gain valuable competitive experience,” said Ocheho.
The championship featured teams from various states, with budding talents exhibiting exceptional performances in a highly competitive atmosphere.
In the U-12 girls’ final, Benue narrowly edged out Sokoto 20-19 after extra time with both teams matching each other, goal for goal in regulation time, forcing the game into an intense extra-time showdown.
In the end, Benue held their nerve to claim the title in a dramatic final while Sokoto’s U-12 boys’ team emerged victorious in a keenly contested final against C & S, winning 28-25.
The battle for third place in the U-15 boys’ category saw Kaduna edge out Adamawa 30-28 in a tightly contested match. Both teams showcased attacking flair, but Kaduna’s superior execution in the closing moments proved decisive in clinching the bronze medal.
Hosts Abia State delivered a dominant performance in the U-15 boys’ final, defeating Niger 37-28 to claim the championship and then they completed a double triumph in the U-15 category, as their girls’ team convincingly defeated Adamawa 32-15.
Ocheho reaffirmed HFN’s commitment to grassroots handball development and pledged continued efforts to support young players in reaching their full potential.
He also extended his appreciation to all participating teams, coaches, officials, and sponsors who contributed to the success of the championship, emphasizing that the future of Nigerian handball remains bright with such initiatives.
He also stated that Handball Federation of Nigeria remains committed to fostering the growth of the sport and looks forward to more fruitful collaborations with state governments and private stakeholders in advancing handball at all levels.
