Islamic Solidarity Games: Amaechi Wins Silver as Chioma Finishes Fourth in Women’s Discus

Team Nigeria added another medal at the Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh as Obiageri Pamela Amaechi claimed silver in the women’s discus event.

Amaechi secured second place with a best throw of 56.99m, achieved on her fifth attempt after earlier efforts of 51.51m, 55.57m, a foul on her third throw, and 54.27m on her fourth.

She finished just behind Cameroon’s Nora Atim Monie, who won gold with a throw of 57.04m.

Although Amaechi could not get close to her personal best of 64.80m set in August 2025, she said she was satisfied given the timing of the competition.

“It has been a hectic season, and I had planned to rest and reboot ahead of next year and the Commonwealth Games,” she said.

“But when Nigeria calls, you have to answer. My body has already shut down for the season, so getting here took a lot. I would have loved to push for gold or near my personal best , but I’m proud to represent my country.”

Fellow Nigerian and African record holder Chioma Chukwujindu Onyekwere finished fourth after struggling to match her top form.

“I’m happy to be here, but I wish I could have done better,” Chioma said. “My body just couldn’t respond. I was already preparing for my break before the invite came, and I arrived only a day before the event due to a tight schedule.

“Now I just want to rest and prepare for next season with full focus on the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow”, she concluded.
