President of Nigeria Basketball Federation Engr. Musa Kida said that the constitutional crisis rocking the basketball family will soon be resolved by FIBA.
He stated this Sunday while addressing journalists after the Federation’s board meeting held at the Lagos Boat Club, Ikoyi, Lagos.
According to him, since the issue is now being handled by the world body, there’s need for all gladiators to exercise patience and wait for the outcome of their verdict which will be binding on all.
” The truth is that some people wrote a petition to FIBA and as such there’s no need for anyone to be throwing banters. Very soon the world body will come out with their verdict on the constitutionality of our tenure and once that decision is made, everyone will abide by the decision”, he stressed.
” You should remember that in 2017, we had a similar scenario and it was FIBA that resolved it at the end of the day and hopefully by the time they take a decision, everything will be resolved.
Engr. Kida reminded those peddling the rumour that the tenure of the present body has ended, that the board was elected on 31, January, 2022 but inaugurated on October, 6, 2022 which clearly shows that their tenure will expire in October this year.
The Federation President who said that his main concern is how to move the game of basketball forward as well as consolidate on the achievements recorded, announced that very soon, the board will make public sponsorship deal for the league.
“Right now, we are carrying out a lot of engagements both with the Sports Commission and critical stakeholders of the game and very soon, we’ll make public our sponsors.
He also announced that as part of efforts to further develop the game the Federation is planning to introduce women national Division one and two leagues which will compliment what the Zenith Bank Premier Basketball League is doing in the development of the game
“We’re planning to have a women national Division 1 and 11 league which will be an all comers affair. With that, all the top 16 teams will be in the Zenith Premier League while others will play in the national league and all this is geared towards the further development of the game.
On D’Tigress preparation for
FIBA Women’s World Cup Qualifiers scheduled for 11th–17th March 2026 in Lyon, France, he promised that the Federation will give the team all financial, moral and logistic support to succeed.
