NBBF, XE Jet Host High-Level Leadership Reception in Lyon to Celebrate D’Tigress Legacy and Strengthen Nigerian Basketball’s Future

The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), in partnership with XE Jet, hosted a high-level leadership reception in Lyon, France, bringing together key stakeholders across government, federation leadership, private sector, and athletes in a unified commitment to the continued growth and global positioning of Nigerian basketball.

The event served as a strategic platform to celebrate the sustained success of Nigeria’s Senior Women’s National Team, D’Tigress, while reinforcing alignment across leadership on the future direction of the sport.

A defining moment of the evening was the emotional tribute to D’Tigress captain, Sarah Ogoke, who officially announced her retirement from international basketball.

Widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Nigerian women’s basketball, her contributions were recognized with deep appreciation by all stakeholders present.

Speaking on behalf of the Federation, NBBF Board Member and South East Representative, Ugo Udezue, reflected on the significance of the moment:

“The tears in the room were real. This was not just the end of a career; it was the closing of a chapter that defined an era. Sarah Ogoke has been a pillar of D’Tigress’ success and a symbol of excellence, leadership, and national pride.”

The leadership panel featured the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Shehu Dikko; the Director General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade; NBBF President, Engr. Musa Kida; and D’Tigress players Amy Okonkwo and Sarah Ogoke, moderated by Wendy Furtado.

Discussions focused on sustaining Nigeria’s dominance in women’s basketball, strengthening institutional frameworks, and expanding opportunities for athletes across all levels of the game.

The Director General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, commended the Federation and the team for their achievements and reaffirmed government support:

“What D’Tigress has achieved is not just success, it is a standard for Nigerian sport. We are proud of this team, and we are committed to strengthening the structures that support them.

The progress within the NBBF is clear, and we will continue to support this direction to ensure sustained excellence.”
