Imo cabinet dissolution: My regrets as Sports Commissioner – Okoronkwo

From Everest Ezihe, Owerri

Hon. Emeka Okoronkwo, the Imo State immediate past Commissioner for Youth, Sports & Social Development, said his regret for the dissolution of the State expanded executive by Governor Hope Uzodimma is his not staying to see Heartland Queens Football Club, Owerri win the first time ever Nigeria Women Football League, NWFL Super Six ticket.

Okoronkwo said this while interacting with Sports Journalists in Owerri on implementation of his documented blue print for sports development and transformation in the State.

It’s pertinent to recall that one of the most striking pet projects Okoronkwo popularly known and addressed as Agujiegbe devoted unmatched energy, resources and time in his short time appointment as a Commissioner is the pet child – Heartland Queens for NWFL Super Six.

As at the time of dissolution of the State expanded EXCO and Sole Administrators of the Local Government Areas by the Governor as part of the constitutional policy for the commencement of his second tenure administration, the Owerri based Imo State Government sponsored female team were on top of the eight-team Group A log with 11 points and with seven more matches left on the calendar to wrap their hands around the enviable ticket.

On the flip side, Hon. Okoronkwo who said he made his marks in the shortest stay in office, however stated that his greatest joy is the fact that a solid foundation has been laid to ensure that even in his absence the team will still go on to achieve the season’s goals.

According to the former Commissioner, “my regret is not staying long enough in office to see Heartland Queens win the NWFL Super Six ticket for the very first time as well as win the league title and ticket to represent Nigeria at the CAF Women’s Champions League.

“The Super Six ticket is an endearing project to me which actually took a whole lot of my time working tirelessly towards its realisation.

“The biggest take for me is that necessary structures are solidly in place to see to the achievement of the goal with or without me in office.

“We actually toiled day and night to ensure that everything is put in order in the overall interest of the team, there’s peace, harmony, love and unity of purpose among the players and officials. All were committed to the vision and mission.

“Welfare of the players and officials were of uttermost priority, and motivation is all time high and the players are damned ready to go all out to achieve positive results.

“The next person coming after me will not have any issue hitting the ground running as the necessary tools to work with are in the right places.

“My prayers are that nothing should be done in whatever form to attempt to derail or destabilise prevailing unity of purpose in the team so that their lofty dreams will be achieved,” Okoronkwo canvassed.
