Nigeria rules YUCATECO WBC/ ABU Amateur boxing Championship

It was all fire works and good display of boxing prowess when finalists stepped into the ring at the Molade Okoya Thomas Indoor Sports Hall of Teslim Balogum Stadium Surulere Lagos, Saturday for the final day of the maiden YUCATECO WBC / ABU Amateur boxing Championship.

All the pugilists on the card of the eleven bouts of the night gave a good account of themselves before an appreciate crowd who were asking for more action as the exchange of blows lasted. And at the end of hostilities, Nigerians dominated the championship, winning most of the fights
The first bout of the day which was an all Nigerian affair saw Faruk Oshikoya fighting in the blue corner recording a unanimous decision against Samuel Dahunsi to emerge champion of the 52 kg category just as Quam Musefiu recorded a 4-1 victory over Mayowa Gbadeyan to emerge champion of the 56 kg class.
Nigerian Rilwan Salawu proved too powerful for his Ugandan opponent, Shakur Mugambe whom he defeated by 5-0 to emerge winner in the 60 kg while in the 64 kg, it was fighting sensation, Abdulramon Abdulwahab who continued to improve his record by recording a 4-1 victory over Abiodun Oluwaseun.

In the 69 kg contest, Nigerian Alabi Olamilekan recorded a 3-2 split decision over Battle Nuhu with David Akintola fighting in the 75 kg recorded a unanimous decision victory against Daniel Joshua just as Saheed Jamiu was declared winner of his 81kg fight with Akoumany Clement of Togo after the referee stoped the fight as a result injury to the Togolese.

The female category saw, Pauline Assogba of Benin Republic defeating Ugandan Brenda Maduwa in their 51kg
clash while Kadirat Ajishola got a unanimous decision victory against Fathia Gafar in their 54 kg clash with Aishat Gbadamosi recording a unanimous decision victory against Fathai Suliamon in their 57 kg clash and Precious Anine also recording a unanimous decision victory over Anuoluwapo Akanni.

Meanwhile Chief Executive Officer of YUCATECO Boxing League sponsor of the tournament Hon. Omonlei Yakubu Imadu has expressed satisfaction with the three day event; saying that it’s a sign of good things that will happen in African Boxing

Imadu who also doubles as President of Boxing Promoters Association of Nigeria while commending all the boxers and officials that took part in the event advised the pugilists to remain focused inorder to get to the pinnacle of their career

Highlight of the tournament was presentation of certificates to referees and ring officials who participated in a workshop ahead of the championship while medals were also presented to the boxers.

The competition attracted the President of the African Boxing Union, Houcine Houichi and top boxing officials from Uganda, Togo, Ghana, Benin Republic and the host nation, Nigeria.
