The dilapidated state of the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos was today further compounded when heavy windstorm that blew in Lagos early today brought down one of the pillars holding the flood light in terrace K of the stadium.
The windstorm which came with heavy downpour saw the weak pillar holding the flood lights cutting off from the middle and landed on the empty space and in the process destroying all the floodlights.
Although no life or injury was recorded but people attributed the incident to long neglect of the facility which was commissioned in 1972 under the administration of Gen. Yakubu Gowon.
It would be recalled that many Nigerians in the past have expressed concern about the poor state of the stadium but nothing has been done to maintain the facility.
Although, the Honourable Minister of Sports Sunday Dare came up with the idea of government/ private sector participation in repair of the stadium but apart from the main bowl and the tartan track which job is going at a very slow speed, nothing meaningful has been done at the stadium..
Some concerned Nigerians who spoke with our correspondent expressed fears that if nothing is done to repair the stadium, it might collapse anything from now even as they called on the Federal Government to take urgent action before more havoc would be recorded at the stadium.
