NOC condoles Kano, Ogun Govt. sports bodies over death of athletes

The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) says that with a heavy heart, it is extending its condolences over the death of no fewer than 20 Kano athletes to the last National Sports Festival.

The athletes from Kano tragically lost their lives in a motor accident about 50 kilometres from Kano while returning to their state after the 22nd edition of the competition in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

“It is with a heavy heart that the President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Engr. Habu Gumel and members of the Olympic family in Nigeria extend their deepest condolences over the death of no fewer than 20 Kano athletes to the last National Sports Festival.

“At this trying moment, the NOC condole with the government of Kano, its Sports Commission, the National Sports Commission and the Ogun State Government,’’ a statement released by the committee’s Public Relations Officer, Tony Nezianya said on Sunday in Lagos.

“The loss of these remarkable individuals, who were not only talented athletes but also champions and role models, is a profound tragedy that has shaken our sporting community.

“Among the deceased are those who proudly represented their state and brought home medals alongside their devoted coaches and supportive administrative officials.

“Their dedication, hard work, and passion for sports have inspired many, and their absence will be deeply felt in the hearts of all who knew them.

“As we face this heartbreaking incident, let us remember and honour their contributions to our sports community and the joy they brought to our lives.’’

It added: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families enduring this unimaginable pain, as well as with all those who are impacted by this devastating loss.

“May their souls rest in peace, and may, we find strength in each other during this difficult time.’’
