NSC Chairman Dikko throws weight behind Abuja All Stars ahead of veterans tourney
As the countdown begins for one of Nigeria’s most anticipated football gatherings, the Abuja All Stars International Invitational Veterans Tournament—organized by Abuja All Stars International—the prestigious event has received a major boost from the top echelon of the nation’s sports administration.
Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Shehu Dikko, has officially thrown his weight behind the forthcoming tournament, pledging both moral and logistical support.
In what can be described as a heartwarming gesture, the soft-spoken NSC boss received a high-powered delegation comprising executives of Abuja All Stars International and members of the Local Organising Committee in his office on Monday. The visit, which served to formally congratulate him on his appointment as NSC Chairman and brief him on the tournament preparations, was met with overwhelming warmth and encouragement.
“You don’t need to go through long protocols to reach me—I’m part of you,” Mallam Dikko said during the meeting. “I understand the value of this tournament, not just in celebrating our football heroes, but also in creating a safe, supportive space for retired players. Beyond the matches, this event fosters camaraderie between generations, offering hope and emotional support to those facing various life challenges—be it financial, emotional, or psychological. These are values that go beyond the pitch and touch lives in meaningful ways.”
Mallam Dikko went on to affirm the NSC’s commitment to ensuring the success of the tournament. He announced that the Commission would be providing logistical support as well as financial backing to aid the smooth execution of the event.
“I may not have been consistent with my own training lately,” he added with a smile, “but I’ll definitely find time to join you on the pitch. Also, know that our doors at the NSC remain open for innovative ideas and projects that can uplift Nigerian sports, in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.”
Speaking earlier, President of Abuja All Stars International, Mr. Nasiru Jibril, expressed profound gratitude to the Chairman for taking the time to host the delegation, despite his packed schedule. He noted that the primary aim of their visit was to extend heartfelt congratulations on his recent appointment and to formally brief him on the Abuja Veterans Tourney.
“This marks the 5th edition of the tournament, with over 600 footballers participating. It’s important for us to share our vision and plans with him, as the number one sportsman in the country. Given his well-known passion for sports, we believe he would be eager to join the game if time permits. We also hope to seek his support in other key areas where assistance may be needed.”
Echoing the President’s sentiments, the club’s patron, Mr. Nduka Ajaibe, commended Mallam Dikko for the warm reception, adding that it came as no surprise. “When you put the right person in the right position, the results speak for themselves. What we are witnessing now in Nigerian sports is a reflection of that,” he said.
