NWF Mourns the Passing of Former Champion Oluwagbenga Olupona
The Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF) has expressed regrets over the death of one of its distinguished former weightlifters, Oluwagbenga Olupona, who died on the morning of Monday, September 15, 2025, after a brief illness.
Olupona was a celebrated athlete who flew Nigeria’s flag with pride at national and international levels.
He etched his name in history by winning three gold medals in the Men’s 56kg category at the First Afro-Asian Games in 2003.
He further represented Nigeria at two editions of the All Africa Games (now African Games), where he clinched one gold and two silver medals at the Abuja 2003 Games and followed with three bronze medals at the Algiers 2007 Games in the Men’s 62kg.
Reacting to the sad news, the President of the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation, Dr Ibrahim Abdul Aladi described Olupona as “an asset to Nigeria weightlifting whose life was sadly cut short at a time when his wealth of wisdom and experience was greatly needed.”
He added that the former champion will be remembered for his selfless service to the sport and the country, praying for the repose of his soul and for God to grant his family the fortitude to bear the loss.
Also mourning the departed, the Technical Director of the NWF and Olupona’s former team mate, Sefiya Onubaye Ahuozia, described him as “a jovial, easy-going, and dedicated individual whose absence will be deeply felt within the weightlifting community.”
The Nigeria Weightlifting Federation extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Oluwagbenga Olupona, while joining the entire Nigerian sports community in celebrating the remarkable legacy he leaves behind.
