
Emmanuel Ogiogio earned host Team Ogun State a valuable bronze medal in the Men’s Singles Open category after recording a total of 10 wins from 15 rounds with a cumulative of 1010 points to finish behind silver medallist Ebike Akwagbe of Team Delta State and FCT Abuja’s Johnny Tamarauagonaemi who took Gold at the 22nd National Sports Festival.
Ogiogio who represented recovered from an early setback after the first day to force his way into the medal zone in the tough but open field.
In the end, it was Tamarauagonaemi of the FCT Abuja, who bagged the gold medal with 12 wins and 3 defeats with a cumulative spread of 975 ahead of Akwagbe who garnered
11 wins from with a cumulative point of 227.
Bukunmi Afolayan representing Team Ogun State missed out of a podium finish with a lower cumulative of 1548 to Success Sule of Team FCT Abuja’s 1562 to place fourth after both players recorded 9 wins and 6 defeats in the Female category.
Female fortress Tuoyo Mayuku stamped her authority in the category as she grabbed a total of 12 wins and 3 defeats and a good spread of 1618 to claim the gold medal for Team Delta State while Ekun Egbe of Team Edo State picked the silver medal with 10½ wins with 575 points.
The play on the boards continues on Day Three as teams restrategise for the Team Event which begins on Sunday.
