Onazi opens up on why Eagles failed to land in Qatar for World Cup

Saudi Arabia based Nigerian international, Ogenyi Onazi has blamed Super Eagles failure to land in Qatar for the FIFA World Cup on the fact that the team lacked structure under Gernot Rohr.

Onazi who spoke on Sportsville an independent sports show on Channels TV said all manner of players strolled into the national team under Rohr insisting there was no structure.

“There were too many new faces. It was a case of you score one goal in Europe then you are invited. The next game you see another set of players getting a call up because he scored in his club. That is not how to build a solid national team,” Onazi said.

He stressed that the new Eagles manager Peseiro must work hard to stabilize the team, even as he added that missing the World Cup in Qatar is very painful pointing out that it would affect every stakeholder.

“It is a slap in the face that we won’t be at the mundial. It is very painful and the reality would set in when action starts in Qatar. It is a miss that would affect everybody. The players would have loved to be there, the sports journalists, the fans, everybody…it is a major setback for our football,” Onazi said.
