Anambra Schools’ Sport Initiative enters crucial stage
The finals of the 3rd edition of the Anambra State Schools Sports Initiative (ANSSI), a competition for primary and secondary schools, has entered crucial stage with schools within the state looking forward to outwit one another.
There are 10 events to be competed for ranging from Ayo to Volleyball with more finals expected to take place on Thursday, June 26.
The grand finale started on June 24 and is expected to end on Friday, June 27 with finals in football and some track and field events while some of the other sports like table tennis, volleyball, basketball, swimming will have their finals on Thursday.
On Wednesday, some events like Taekwondo was concluded with the medals going to different schools especially in the Poomsae event.
The dominant school in the volleyball remain Washington School who are going to be playing in the finals of both the boys U-14 and U-18, same as the girls U-14 and also in the semi-final of the girls U-18, meeting Stella Maris, Umueri in the second semi-final on Thursday morning.
Speaking with ANSSI media in Awka, the venue of the grand finale, the Anambra State’s Women Volleyball coach, Obi Ossai, said he was impressed with what happened at the tournament as there are hope for the country as far as volleyball is concerned.
“We are a state known for developing athletes, and I am happy with what the players showed on the court from both the boys and the girls,” he said.
“The best way to catch them young is from the youth and key place is the grassroots, school sports and that’s what Anambra State government is doing which I am happy about.”
Athletics will see so many finals taking place on Thursday with the U-12 60m, 200m finals for both the U-14 and U-18, the 4x100m final, among others.
