The National President of the Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), Chief Sunday Ezeobiora, has called on the Federal Government to support farmers through reduction in tariffs on imported micro-inputs and poultry production equipment as well as implement a duty-free policy to lower production costs and stimulate industry growth.
Ezeobiora, who also doubles as the CEO of Sunchi Integrated Farms, the biggest poultry farm in the Southeast, made the call while addressing participants during the opening ceremony of the 14th edition of the annual Nigeria Poultry Show recently held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
In order to increase the industry’s contribution to Nigeria’s economy and food security, the PAN leader emphasized in his speech the significance of prompt action and long-term strategies.
In contrast to the previous past, when the industry was beset by high raw material and feed prices, he portrayed Nigerian poultry farming as a prosperous enterprise.
In his remarks, Chief Ezeobiora stated, “I’m honored to address this distinguished gathering of farmers, inventors, researchers, policymakers, and partners who continue to sustain one of the most dynamic sectors of our agricultural economy—the poultry subsector.”
“Growing poultry may be a very lucrative business, particularly if you have other people’s cooperation and the government provides enabling environment, because you will be able to make money every day from sales.
“It is profitable because you can generate income from sales on a daily basis.”
His optimism underscores the potential rewards of poultry farming, even in the face of adversity. To overcome the challenges, Ezeobiora emphasized the need for proper monitoring and disease control measures, such as regular veterinary checkups and adherence to biosecurity protocols.
He also advocated for greater family involvement to reduce theft and mismanagement.
The PAN boss, however advised new farmers to be patient and consistent, acknowledging that challenges are inevitable but surmountable with dedication.
“You will face issues, but you must stay focused,” he said. The High Chief urged the government to follow through on promises of support, such as compensation for losses due to disease outbreak.
