Poor Olympics Outing : Peter Obi calls for investigation of billions spent on zero medal

Labour Party Presidential candidate in 2023 General election, Mr Peter Obi has described the poor showing of Nigeria at the Paris 2024 Olympics where the country spent 12 Billion Naira with no medal to show as unacceptable.

The former Anambra State Governor, took to his verified X handle to express his displeasure over what he called administrative recklessness and rascality which characterised Nigeria outing both on the field and outside of the field at the just concluded Paris 2024 Olympics.

He made a particular mention to the Favour Ofili exclusion from the Women 100 meter list as well the Bike Borrowing ” saga of Nigeria sole Cyclist to the Olympic, Ese Ukpeseraye as well the case of Godson Brumen who was injured before the Olympics but was still registered for the games and failed to show for his event.

The influential political leader of the Obidient movement queried the spending of 12 Billion on the games with nothing to show for it.

” We invested about N12 billion in this year’ s Olympics, which is almost twice the amount budgeted for the entire Ministry of Science and Technology for this year.”

” ‘How can one explain that a country like Jamaica spent less than 5% of what we spent on our contingents for the Paris Olympics 2024 and won as many as 6 medals. Yet with our huge financial investments and large contingent, we could not win even a single medal?”

He then called for for investigation of how the huge sum of money was spent with no medals for the huge investment.

” We must now interrogate the relationship between this huge investment and our dismal outcome.”

He sums up by describing the whole show as a shame and calls on the Government to investigate all the misconduct and ensure that necessary punishment is meted out to prevent future occurrence.

” What a country! What a shame! When will we stop these rascalities that always rob our nation of golden opportunities to make a positive change? I call on the government to investigate these gross misconducts and make sure that those responsible do not have the opportunity to do so again”.

” We must build a nation of discipline and commitment to duty, where competence and capacity reign. That is the New Nigeria we preach, and it is possible”.

Nigeria registered 88 Athletes for the games and participated in 12 sports but returned home empty handed.
