Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu has pleaded with Nigerians to be patient as the current deplorable electricity supply across the country will be begin to improve in the next two weeks time.
The country has been thrown into darkness in the past weeks as power supply dropped drastically due to unavailable gas supply to the generation companies.
Adelabu in his address to the media on the adverse effects of poor power supply to households and businesses blamed the present blackout on lack of gas supply to the Gencos.
He explained that since the national grid is powered by 75 percent of gas and 25 percent is hydro powered, the current electricity outage will persist due to no gas supply to the gencos.
“The main issue we have today is gas supply shortage to the power plants. As I mentioned before, 75 percent of our power plants are using gas while 25 percent is using water. If there is no gas supply, there is nothing the generating companies can do. The turbines will just be lying fallow without being used.”
“I can tell you that with the committee we have set-up and comments from the gas suppliers and time left for the gas pipeline repairs, I can tell you that two weeks from now we should start seeing improvement in supply, two weeks”, he emphasised.
Hospitals, companies, Small scale businesses and individuals lives have been dislocated by lack of power supply especially with the increase in prices of petroleum products caused by the ongoing war in the gulf region.
Israel and the United States on February 28 attacked Iran who retaliated by destroying oil facilities of neighbouring US allies and closing the Strait of Hormuz, a passage for the supply of oil and gas to the rest of the world.
As a result, the escalation has affected supply forcing his prices on the global economy.
