Rivers State athletes are buzzing with excitement as they prepare to take part in the 2nd Niger Delta Games (NDG) in Benin, Edo State.
The athletes, competing in sports like athletics, basketball, and table tennis, are confident of making a mark in the games.
The Rivers State basketball team, defending champions of the NDG, are training hard to retain their title. Player Dalhati Wealth expressed confidence in his team’s abilities, citing their focus on new techniques and tactics.
“We’ve been training hard, learning new tactics, and we’re ready to defend our title,” Wealth said.
He commended the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for initiating the games, saying it provides a platform for youths to showcase their talents.
Handballer Kelvin Harrison is also optimistic about winning gold for Rivers State. “I’m excited to be part of the more than 3000 athletes competing in the games. See you there as I go for gold!” he said in a promotional video.
The athletes are not just focused on winning medals; they’re also using the platform to showcase their skills and potentially get noticed by local and foreign scouts. The games are expected to discover hidden talents in the region.
The NDDC initiative has been praised by athletes, including Hector Tobogu, who said the tournament has helped youths develop interest in sports and discover their strengths.
The 2nd Niger Delta Games kick off on February 20 in Benin, Edo State.
