Super Eagles begin AFCON 2025 qualifiers on a bright note, outclass Cheetahs in Uyo
The Super Eagles began their 2025 Morocco AFCON qualifiers on a good note when they defeated Cheetahs of Benin Republic 3-0 Saturday evening at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
The rejuvenated Super Eagles who few months ago lost by 1-2 to the same team in a World Cup qualifiers in Cote d’Ivoire showed class against their fellow West Africans whom they dominated throughout the duration of the match.
The win put the Super Eagles at the top of Group D after both Libya and Rwanda played out a 1-1 draw last Thursday.
It is also the biggest win by the Super Eagles since their 2023 6-0 win over Sao Tome & Principe last year September.
Ademola Lookman, scored a brace in the match to brighten his chances emerging as 2024 African Footballer of the Year.
The current title holder, Victor Osimhen proved his mettle coming off the bench in the second half to double Nigeria’s lead after Lookman’s late first half goal.
The Super Eagles will now meet their Rwanda on Tuesday with the hope of consolidating their lead.
Benin Republic with no points and a deficit of three goals are at the bottom of the Group.
