SWAN, Amuneke mourn Heartland FC’s ex-Protocol Officer, Tonnex Chukwu

Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, Imo State Chapter and South East Zone have expressed shock and profound sadness over the untimely demise of Mr. Tonnex Chukwu, the former Media Director and Protocol Officer of Enyimba International FC and Heartland FC respectively who died following an auto crash.

Similarly, Heartland Football Club, Owerri has announced that it received with rude shock and profound sadness the news of the passing of its former Protocol Officer and Licensing Officer, Mr. Tonnex Chukwu.

Mr. Chukwu who was involved in a road crash a couple of weeks ago, died Monday leaving behind a legacy of dedication, professionalism, and unwavering passion for sports especially football.

In a statement issued by Ikemefuna Asika and Kennedy Onwunali, Vice President and Zonal Secretary of SWAN East Zone respectively, the group remarked that Mr. Chukwu was a consummate professional whose dedication, integrity, and passion for sports journalism distinguished him as one of the finest in the industry.

The statement read, “His remarkable service to Enyimba International FC, Heartland FC and his immense contributions to the growth of media coverage in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) and continental competitions under Confederation of African Football (CAF) earned him admiration from colleagues, administrators, players and fans across the country.

“South East SWAN stands in solidarity with the Chukwu family in this moment of deep loss. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and all who were touched by his humility, warmth and exemplary professionalism.

“His voice, story telling and unwavering commitment enriched football reportage in Nigeria, making Mr. Chukwu not just a pillar of sports journalism but a respected figure whose influence cut across regional lines and traditions.
The passion and care he brought to every assignment he undertook remain indelible.

The association prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul and for God to grant his loved ones the strength to bear the painful loss with fortitude.
His death has thrown his
community in Imo State and beyond into mourning.

Until his death, Chukwu remained a respected figure in sports journalism and football administration, known for his professionalism, humility, and unwavering passion for the development of the game.

“As a former Media Officer of Enyimba FC and later Protocol and Licensing Officer at Heartland FC, he distinguished himself through diligence, competence, and a deep understanding of football operations. His contributions to club administration and media relations left lasting impressions on colleagues and stakeholders across the Nigerian football landscape.”

Reacting to the sad development, Chairman of Imo SWAN, Mr. Cosmos Chukwuemeka, described the late Tonnex Chukwu as a committed journalist and sports administrator who embodied excellence and dedication.

“The death of Tonnex Chukwu is a devastating blow to the sports writing fraternity in Imo State and the entire Nigerian football community. He was a thorough professional, a dependable colleague, and a passionate advocate for the growth of sports.

“His work ethic, integrity, and love for the game were exemplary. We have lost not just a colleague, but a brother and friend.”

He further noted that the late sports journalist served the profession with honour and elevated the standards of sports media practice through his commitment and discipline.

Imo SWAN extends its heartfelt condolences to his immediate family, colleagues at Enyimba FC and Heartland FC, friends, and the wider football and media community during this difficult time.

In his condolence message, , the Technical Manager of Heartland FC, Emmanuel Amuneke described Chukwu’s sudden departure as a painful loss not only to Heartland FC but to the entire Nigerian football family.

“A seasoned sports journalist and former Media Officer of Enyimba FC, Mr. Chukwu served Heartland FC with distinction. During his time with the Naze Millionaires, he brought immense experience, structure, and commitment to his roles, contributing significantly to the administrative and operational growth of the club.

“I am deeply shocked by the news of Tonnex Chukwu’s death. He was a thorough professional whose experience and insight were invaluable to Heartland FC. His passion for the game and dedication to duty stood him out. This is a painful loss, and he will be greatly missed.
