Diri National Scrabble Championship: Bayelsa students get free registration

Bayelsa state students (U-16) have been given the nod to register and feature in the maiden Gov Duoye Diri national scrabble championship without paying a dime.

Chairman of Bayelsa State Scrabble Association, Daniel Alabra who confirmed this said the free registration is part of the efforts of the association to popularize the game of scrabble amongst secondary school students in Bayelsa.

He stated that all is virtually set for the championship which is billed to run from May 28-30 at the Chief Harold Dappa Biriye Conference Centre, Onopa, Yenagoa.

In the words of Alabra…”With a former World Champion, former African Champions, the best of the best Scrabble players Nigeria has on offer among no fewer than 400 participants, the focus of the global Board Game community would be Bayelsa this weekend. For three days, May 28-30, Yenagoa would be agog with hotels, restaurants, drinking bars etc all bursting at their seams and impacting on the local economy.”

A total prize money of N4m would be on offer with the star prize of N500,000 to the best player. There would be consolation prizes for the best female player in the various categories which include Masters, Intermediate, Veterans and Opens.
