Ogun State Scrabble Team has claimed the State title at the 2025 Asaph Zadok National Scrabble Festival after emerging with the lowest Mean Rank of 12.33 points.
The team comprising current African champion Oluwatimilehin Doko, Samuel Adebola, Jimoh Abdulmumin, Tunde Saporu, Bukunmi Afolayan and former national captain Cyril Umebiye exhumed exceptional team spirit by putting up a commanding strategies to navigate to the top.
Adebola’s strong performance was the booster for Team Ogun as he won 18 out of 28 duels on the number and word board in Benin, Edo State.
Lagos (16:43), Edo (21:17), FCT Abuja (20:50), Oyo (21:50) and Rivers States (22:50) finished 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th respectively.
Ogun State Scrabble Association (OSSA) Chairman Adekoyejo Adegbesan in a statement issued by the Media Officer Tayo Ogunseye, expressed his delight with the team’s performance which underlines the high level of training and preparation the players were subjected to especially with the National Sports Festival coming up in May.
‘Again, this is another remarkable result by our team which definitely didn’t come easy.’ He confessed.
‘Winning the State category of the Asaph Zadok National Championship brings a sharp reminder that investment, planning, training and motivation with the right team can give the desired outcome.
‘We at the OSSA are grateful for working closely with Hon. Wasiu Isiaka the Commissioner for Sports Development and the Ogun State Government for their support even as we expect more in terms of funds to up our preparations as we go into closed camping almost immediately for the National Sports Festival which we are hosting next month.”
‘Congratulations to Team Ogun for pushing the bar higher again’, concluded Adegbesan who also runs the affairs of the Scrabble continental body, PANASA as it’s President.
In the individual category, George Ezinore from Edo state won the title and he was decorated with the iconic “Green Jacket”.
The 3-day championship is the biggest national championship organised by the Nigeria Scrabble Federation annually.
