Team Ondo shines in women’s wrestling on Day 6 of Gov Diri Wrestling Classics
Ondo State stole the spotlight in the women’s wrestling events on Day 6 of the ongoing 4th Governor Douye Diri Wrestling Classics in Yenagoa on Monday, March 30.
African champion Khadijat Idris (Ondo State) asserted her dominance in the women’s 55kg category, defeating rising sensation Mary Ayeloh (Bayelsa State) by technical superiority.
Happiness Soso of Delta State and Augustine Rhoda of Lagos State claimed bronze medals in the category.
In the women’s 76kg event, Damola Ojo of Ondo State retained her title after defeating all her opponents in the round-robin format.
Nigerian Army wrestler Laide Ojo settled for the silver medal, losing her only bout to the Ondo State star. Juliet Ogo (Bayelsa State) and Mercy Alison (Abia State) each won bronze medals.
Meanwhile, Patience Kakanda of Bayelsa State stunned Precious Tieberi of the Nigeria Army 3-1 in the final to emerge as the new champion in the women’s 62kg category.
Rivers State’s Esther Asaolu also retained her title in the 59kg after dispatching all her opponents in the round robin format.
Isioma Abojei (Delta State) and Blessing Apah (Dynamite Club) won bronze medals.
