Tokyo 2025: AFN Names 15 Athletes for World Championships
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has unveiled a strong 15-man team that will represent the nation at the 20th World Athletics Championships, scheduled to hold from September 13–21, 2025, at the Japan National Stadium in Tokyo.
The squad, made up of seven women and eight men, will compete across 11 events, including the sprints, hurdles, long jump, throws, and relays.
Headlining the team is world record holder in the 100m hurdles, Oluwatobi Amusan, alongside Olympic bronze medalist and long jump queen Ese Brume. Also listed are 400m hurdles star Nathaniel Ezekiel and experienced shot putter Chukwuebuka Enekwechi.

AFN President, Chief Tonobok Okowa, said the selection was based strictly on merit and qualification standards set by World Athletics. He expressed confidence that the athletes will give their best and bring glory to the country in Tokyo.
“We are optimistic that Team Nigeria will make the nation proud. I must commend the coaches, sponsors, and government agencies who have supported these athletes in their journey. More developmental programmes are in the pipeline to ensure the continuous growth of athletics in Nigeria,” Chief Okowa assured.
With Amusan, Brume, Ezekiel, and Ajayi leading the charge, expectations are high for Team Nigeria to shine on the global stage when the championship begins in less than two weeks.
