Trade Union: CALSSAN boss says new body out to take courier services to greater heights

THE Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Ministry of Labour and Employment has officially granted the request made by the Courier and Logistics Services Staff Association of Nigeria, CALSSAN to be registered and operate as a trade union under the labour laws of Nigeria to cater for the welfare of its over four million workforce in the country.
In a brief ceremony at the headquarters of the ministry in Abuja last Tuesday, April 16, 2024, the Registrar of Trade Unions, Mr. Amos Falonipe on behalf of the minister, Nkeiruka Onyejiocha formally handed over to the officials of CALSSAN the certificate of registration to enable the association operate as a trade union under the labour laws of Nigeria.
Speaking at the event the president of the association, Comrade Festus Oluwatuyi said: “Today is a great day in the annals of the trade union movement in Nigeria with the registration and presentation of certificate for the youngest trade union to cover the Trade Unions rights of over four million Nigerian workers in the Courier and Logistics Industry.
“On behalf of the national executive council of the newly registered union, the Courier and Logistics Services Staff Association of Nigeria (CALSSAN) we say a big thank you to the Minister of Labour and Employment, the Registrar of Trade Unions and the entire staff of the Ministry for finding merit in our application.
“We promise to discharge our duties in line with the Labour laws of the country. The leadership of the union also appeals to our employers to see us as partners in progress and embrace social dialogue in the resolution of any dispute that may arise in the course of doing our job. We call for cooperation and collaboration in taking the sector to greater heights in boosting the nation’s economy.
“We are also using this opportunity to call on workers and our members to be alive to their responsibilities in the workplace as the union is there to protect their interests legitimately.
“May we also draw the attention of the Honorable Minister on the following but not limited issues affecting the Courier Industry and Workers: Poor remuneration of workers by employers, none existing conditions of service and collective bargaining agreement in the industry, exemption of articulated Courier and Logistics vehicles from toll gates payment nationwide, security surveillance on illegal/quack operators and review of Courier and Logistics policy by the National Assembly in line with the best global practice”.
