W/Cup qualifiers: Super Eagles fail to beat South Africa in Uyo

The Super Eagles Friday night continued their poor run in the qualifying series of the FIFA 2026 World Cup when they failed to beat Bafana Bafana of South Africa on home soil.
The game decided at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo Akwa Ibom State is the first meeting of the two countries after Nigeria dumped the boys from the rainbow nations out of AFCON 2024 after a penalty shootout.
Starting from the first half, the visitors showed that they were not in Nigeria for fun as they dictated the pace of the game and this paid off after 28 minutes of play when Themba Zwane put the South Africans ahead.
Bafana Bafana maintained the one goal lead till the end of the first 45 minutes.
However, their lead did not last in the second half as Turkish-based Nigerian midfielder, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru of Hatayspor scored the equalizer for Nigeria in the 46th minute.
After the equalizer, the Coach Finidi George lead side didn’t make any serious effort to grab the three points at stake with the game ending 1-1.
The draw leaves the Super Eagles who are yet to win a game in the qualifiers in the 5th spot in Group C, a point below 4th placed South Africa and two points below first placed Lesotho.
Super Eagles will play their next game against third placed Benin Republic in Abidjan on Monday, June 10 while South Africa will face Zimbabwe.
