2026 Commonwealth Games: Esther Nworgu wins first gold for Team Nigeria

Esther Nworgu has won Nigeria’s first gold medal of the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games, winning the women’s lightweight para powerlifting title with a Games-record performance. 

Nworgu broke the Games record with her opening lift of 118kg before raising it to 123kg on her second attempt. The lift earned her 119 points and the gold medal.

Esther Oyema completed a Nigerian first and second positions, winning taking silver with a best lift of 125kg and 115.5 points.

England’s Olivia Broome won bronze after lifting 119kg for 106.6 points.
