The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has appointed Abdulquadri Jaiyeola as the alternate captain of its men’s volleyball team ahead of the second phase of the 2026 Comptroller General of Customs (CGC) Volleyball Premier League.
The appointment was announced in a statement signed by the Head of Sports, Samuel Onikeku, on Monday, August 3, with the service expressing confidence that Jaiyeola’s leadership qualities will strengthen the team’s quest for success in the concluding stage of the league.
According to Onikeku, Jaiyeola’s elevation is a reward for his outstanding leadership credentials, having recently captained Nigeria’s senior men’s volleyball team to qualification for the African Nations Championship qualifiers in Abidjan. He noted that the experienced player has consistently demonstrated leadership and commitment at both the national and club levels.
“Abdulquadri Jaiyeola has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership both at the national and club levels. His experience and dedication make him a worthy addition to the team’s leadership structure as alternate captain,” Onikeku said. He also recalled that Jaiyeola represented the Nigeria Customs Service at the 2021 African Men’s Club Championship in Tunisia during a previous stint with the team.
The Customs sports chief clarified that the latest appointment does not alter the existing leadership hierarchy, with Philip Akande remaining the team captain, Chris Udah serving as the first assistant captain, and Princewill Okoi retaining his role as the second assistant captain.
Onikeku also praised the players for their impressive display during the first phase of the 2026 CGC Volleyball Premier League, describing their performances as a reflection of professionalism, discipline and commitment.
He challenged the squad to raise their level ahead of the decisive phase of the competition, urging them to maintain their focus and complement their efforts with hard work, teamwork and consistency as they pursue the club’s objectives in the title race.
