MEIIN Celebrates Democracy Day, Praises Tinubu’s Role in Nigeria’s Democratic Struggle
The Movement for Electoral Integrity in Nigeria (MEIIN) has congratulated Nigerians on the occasion of the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, describing June 12 as a historic symbol of the nation’s struggle for democratic governance and the affirmation of the people’s will.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Director-General and National Convener of the organization, Hon. Adewale Fasade, said Democracy Day remains a defining moment in Nigeria’s political history and a tribute to the courage and sacrifices of individuals who fought to end military rule and restore democratic governance.
MEIIN paid tribute to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, acknowledging his role as one of the prominent pro-democracy activists who opposed military dictatorship and contributed significantly to the struggle that paved the way for Nigeria’s return to democratic rule.
According to the organization, President Tinubu’s commitment to democratic ideals and his contributions to the June 12 movement remain an inspiration to current and future generations of Nigerians.
The group noted that while Nigeria’s democracy has made notable progress since the return to civilian rule in 1999, efforts to strengthen democratic institutions must continue to focus on electoral integrity, transparency, accountability, and adherence to the rule of law.
“As an organization dedicated to the promotion of electoral integrity, we believe that credible elections remain the foundation of a sustainable democracy,” Fasade stated.
“The sanctity of the ballot, transparency in the electoral process, and citizens’ confidence in democratic institutions are essential for national development and political stability.”
MEIIN also commended the Tinubu administration for what it described as its commitment to strengthening democratic institutions, promoting national development, and implementing reforms aimed at improving governance and enhancing the welfare of citizens.
The organization urged political leaders, government institutions, civil society groups, the media, and Nigerians across the country to recommit themselves to the principles of patriotism, national unity, peaceful political participation, and the protection of the country’s democratic achievements.
Reaffirming its commitment to electoral reforms and civic engagement, MEIIN pledged continued support for initiatives that promote credible elections, democratic accountability, and increased citizen participation in governance.
The organization stressed that safeguarding democracy requires collective effort and sustained commitment to strengthening institutions that guarantee free, fair, and credible elections.
MEIIN further expressed optimism about Nigeria’s democratic future, stating that the country would continue to make progress in democratic consolidation, peace, unity, and national development.
