FIFA okays Normalization Committee for Nigeria football which must not stay beyond May 2027

Bureau of the Council takes key decisions

• Financial distribution model for FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027™ approved
• United States appointed as host of FIFA Women’s Club World Cup 2028™
• Qatar to host final three matches of FIFA Intercontinental Cup 2026™

Following on from the FIFA Council meeting held in Zurich, Switzerland, on 15 October 2026, the Bureau of the Council has taken the following decisions:

Women’s football

• Approval of the financial distribution model for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027™, which will be based on prize money, preparation money and the FIFA Club Benefits Programme.

Preparation money will be increased to USD 2.5 million per Participating Member Association, on par with the FIFA World Cup 2026. Likewise, players participating in the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 will enjoy the same service levels as their male counterparts in 2026, and any surplus from the women’s showpiece will be allocated to the Member Associations involved, with a specific amount ring-fenced for players.

Additional details are due to be discussed by the FIFA Council at its next meeting in December 2026.

• Appointment of the United States as host of the inaugural FIFA Women’s Club World Cup™, which will be staged from 5 to 30 January 2028. The decision was taken in view of its experience in organising FIFA tournaments, the maturity of its infrastructure and services and the level of stakeholder interest in women’s football in the country.

Access will be granted based on the sporting results of clubs in their confederation’s premier club competition over the four-year qualifying period spanning the seasons ending in 2024 and 2027, to ensure that the competition is of the highest possible quality. 

• Amendment to the dates of the final phase of the FIFA Women’s Champions Cup 2027™, which will consequently take place from 26 to 31 January 2027 in Miami. The decision was taken in order to enhance the visibility of the tournament by scheduling the two semi-finals on separate days.

• The dates for the FIFA U-20 World Cup Azerbaijan & Uzbekistan 2027™ were established: 17 September to 9 October 2027.
• Appointment of a normalisation committee for the Nigeria Football Federation until 31 May 2027 at the latest.
