The Pan African Scrabble Association (PANASA) is set to deploy a Nigerian-developed tournament management software, “Direktor”, at the 16th Africa Scrabble Championship (ASC) scheduled to hold in Monrovia, Liberia, from October 22 to 25.

Developed by Nigerian Scrabble innovator and technologist Emmanuel Enyi, Direktor is designed to modernise tournament administration by simplifying result submission, reducing manual workload and improving the efficiency of competitive Scrabble events.

According to a statement issued by the body, the project has received financial support over the past year from PANASA President Adekoyejo Adegbesan, World English-Language Scrabble Players Association (WESPA) President Lukeman Owolabi, Lekki Scrabble Club Chairman Samuel Anikoh, and Mr Nsikan Iyanam.

The software was developed to address longstanding challenges associated with manual result processing, particularly the time required for tournament officials to transfer scores from paper result slips into tournament systems.

Through its integration with the widely used TSH tournament software, Direktor enables players to submit their results directly, potentially reducing queues, transcription errors and delays in updating tournament standings.

Following successful deployment, refinement and testing at major competitions in Nigeria, including the recent Lekki Scrabble Classics, the Monrovia championship will represent Direktor’s largest deployment to date and its debut at the continental championship level.

At the centre of the software is its Smart Submission Page, which simplifies the process of submitting match results. Once players identify themselves, the system can retain their profiles for subsequent rounds and display relevant information, including their names, countries, photographs, ratings and scheduled opponents.

The platform also addresses the common challenge of identifying which player made the opening move by allowing participants to indicate who went first while keeping scores clearly labelled, thereby reducing the risk of reversed results.

Other features include automatic spread calculations, opponent verification, alerts for unusual scores, photographic backups of signed scoresheets and previews of tournament performance, including estimated WESPA rating movements.

Designed to accommodate unreliable internet connectivity, Direktor can also store results locally on a player’s device during temporary network disruptions and transmit them when the connection is restored.

According to the development team’s internal pre-deployment assessment, the software successfully completed 20 player-side tests and 31 director-side checks. The tests covered offline submissions, duplicate entries, simultaneous submissions, incorrect opponents, premature submissions, score validation and rating calculations.

Ahead of the championship, PANASA Technical Director Chrispine Okeyo is expected to conduct further technical assessments alongside Enyi to support the software’s effective deployment in Liberia.

For players, the system is expected to provide a simpler submission process, reduce queuing and offer quicker access to tournament information. For officials, it promises streamlined result management, fewer transcription errors and faster processing of standings and subsequent rounds.

Beyond its operational benefits, the deployment highlights the growing capacity of Africa’s Scrabble community to develop homegrown technological solutions tailored to the sport’s needs.

The introduction of Direktor at the 16th Africa Scrabble Championship is therefore expected to mark a significant step towards modernising tournament administration while showcasing Nigerian innovation on the continental stage.
