The National Sports Commission (NSC) has endorsed the forthcoming Legends Football Game, an exhibition match expected to bring together some of Nigeria’s finest football icons and celebrated African football greats in Lagos on November 8, 2026.
The match, scheduled to take place at the Onikan Stadium, will feature 15 Super Eagles legends from Nigeria’s celebrated 1994 and 1996 squads against 13 African football legends in a contest aimed at celebrating the contributions of the continent’s football heroes.
According to a statement by Kola Daniel the Special Assistant on Media, Hon. Bukola Olopade, described the initiative as a laudable effort to honour former players whose achievements brought pride to Nigeria and helped shape the country’s football history.
Olopade said the Commission was pleased to support an event that recognises the contributions of the legends while giving a new generation of football fans an opportunity to appreciate the players who laid the foundation for Nigeria’s success on the international stage.
“We cannot celebrate our football legends enough. The global recognition and positive image they brought to our country through their achievements cannot be quantified. They inspired generations of young Nigerians and continue to serve as role models for aspiring footballers,” Olopade said.
He commended the organisers for creating a platform to honour the former players and celebrate their enduring contributions to Nigerian football.
The NSC Director General also called on football fans in Lagos and other parts of the country to turn out in large numbers for the historic occasion.
“I want to urge football fans in Lagos and across the country to come out in their numbers and be part of this historic occasion. It is an opportunity to honour our legends and see them back on the pitch after so many memorable years,” he said.
“These are players who gave us unforgettable moments, inspired national pride and showed the world the quality and talent of Nigerian football. They deserve to be celebrated,” he added.
The Legends Football Game is being organised by Toptier Sports Management in collaboration with Afreximbank and CANEX. The event was officially unveiled in Lagos on September 9, 2026.
