3 Days to Go: JJ Okocha, Kanu, Amokachi, Other Super Eagles Legends Set for Lagos Reunion as African Icons Arrive for Legends Football Game

Nigerian football icons from the celebrated 1994 and 1996 Super Eagles generations are set to reunite with some of Africa’s finest football legends on Sunday, November 8, as preparations gather momentum for the much-anticipated Legends Football Game at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos.

The historic gathering will bring together some of the personalities whose performances helped define one of the most memorable periods in Nigerian and African football, offering fans an opportunity to relive the memories and celebrate the achievements of a generation that inspired millions.

Leading the Nigerian contingent are former Super Eagles captains and internationals Austin Jay-Jay Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu, Mutiu Adepoju, Finidi George, Taribo West, Daniel Amokachi, Samson Siasia, Victor Ikpeba, Alloy Agu and Garba Lawal, among other distinguished former internationals.

They will face a star-studded African Legends side featuring celebrated names such as Emmanuel Adebayor, El-Hadji Diouf, Stephen Appiah, Didier Zokora, Rigobert Song, Alexandre Song, Peter Ndlovu, Benjani Mwaruwari, Khalilou Fadiga and other continental greats.

The event, presented by Toptier Sports Management in collaboration with the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) and its Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX) programme, is designed to celebrate 30 years of Nigeria’s remarkable football achievements, particularly the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations triumph and the historic 1996 Olympic gold medal victory in Atlanta.

Nigeria’s 1994 generation conquered Africa in Tunisia before reaching the Round of 16 at the country’s maiden FIFA World Cup appearance in the United States. Two years later, the team made history in Atlanta, becoming the first African nation to win Olympic men’s football gold after defeating Brazil and Argentina in the knockout stages.

In strengthening the logistics for the gathering of the football greats, ValueJet has been unveiled as the Official Airline Partner of the Legends Football Game, supporting the movement of the former internationals to Lagos for the historic reunion.

The organisers also announced Team 33 Production as the event’s Production Partner, responsible for bringing the sights, sounds and atmosphere of the football celebration to audiences through professional production and coverage.

The partnership announcements underscore the collaborative effort behind the event, which seeks to bring together sports, entertainment, culture and corporate participation in celebrating Africa’s football heritage.

Beyond the football encounter, the Legends Football Game forms part of CANEX WKND 2026, Afreximbank’s flagship platform for advancing Africa’s creative and cultural industries. It also provides an opportunity to spotlight the commercial potential of African sports and the need to create sustainable opportunities for athletes beyond their active playing careers.

Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Toptier Sports Management, Chichi Nwoko, has described the initiative as an opportunity to recognize the contributions of football heroes while inspiring a new generation to appreciate the history and possibilities of African football.

The programme will also feature engagements with young footballers, including a mini football camp involving 500 children, alongside entertainment and cultural performances designed to make the occasion a memorable celebration for fans and families.

The match-day experience will feature music, dance and performances, with a special presentation planned to honour the heroes of the 1994 and 1996 generations after the encounter.

The Legends Football Game is expected to attract football enthusiasts, corporate stakeholders, members of the creative industry and supporters from across Nigeria and beyond.

For fans unable to attend physically, the match will be broadcast live on NTA, AIT and Silverbird.

As Lagos prepares to welcome the legends, the message behind the gathering remains clear: the achievements of those who carried Nigeria and Africa’s football ambitions to historic heights deserve to be celebrated, remembered and passed on to future generations.
