More than 3,000 runners are expected to converge on Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Saturday for the fifth edition of the Abeokuta 10km Race, with organisers Nilayo Sports Management Limited (NSML) promising a safe and hitch-free event.
The race, scheduled to start at 7am from Macjob Grammar School, Onikolobo, will finish at the MKO Abiola International Stadium.
Speaking at the pre-race press conference on Friday at the MKO Abiola Stadium, NSML Managing Director, Yetunde Olopade, expressed confidence in the level of preparation for the event while appreciating the Ogun State Government, sponsors and partners for their support.
She particularly acknowledged the contributions of the Ogun State Government, Phlo, Bet9ja Foundation, Aquafina and 7UP to the development of the race.
“The Ogun State Government has been of immense support. We run on their roads, and the Commissioner for Sports was meant to be here but had another very important state function, so we are very grateful,” Olopade said.
“Our sponsors and partners have been wonderful too, so we are grateful and glad to be doing this again.”
The race will offer a total cash prize structure in dollars, with the overall winner in both the men’s and women’s categories set to receive $1,000.
The first and second runners-up will earn $750 and $500 respectively, while every participant who completes the race will receive a commemorative medal.
She also disclosed that a post-race concert would be held at the finish-line area to provide additional entertainment for participants and spectators.
Meanwhile, Race Director Yusuf Alli said the organisers had put adequate measures in place to ensure the safety and comfort of runners.
“All the arrangements have been put in place. We have looked at the route, the water points, medical support, security and every other aspect of the race to make sure that participants have a safe and enjoyable experience,” Alli said.
“We are expecting over 3,000 runners, so we are prepared for the numbers. We want everybody to come out, enjoy the race, compete fairly and, most importantly, finish safely.”
Five water stations will be strategically positioned along the route, with fruits also available to runners.
Alli urged participants to run according to their individual pace and make proper use of the facilities provided along the route.
One of the sponsors, Phlo Managing Director Michael Ailuelohia said the apparel company decided to support the Abeokuta 10km Race because of its commitment to promoting active lifestyles and community engagement.
“Phlo is not just an apparel brand; we see ourselves as a movement brand. We love to align with activities that get people moving and positively affect communities.”
He added that the race represents more than competition, noting that it provides an opportunity to bring people together while promoting fitness and healthy living.
The fifth edition of the Abeokuta 10km Race is expected to feature professional indigenous athletes, fitness enthusiasts and members of the public in what organisers describe as a celebration of sport, movement and healthy living in Ogun State.
