Residents of Tin Can Island area in Apapa had their hearts in their mouths when explosions rocked the area Friday night.

The explosions were from one of the tank farms in the area (Trinity bus stop) which went up in flames.

The bangs woke up residents at about mid night. Moments after the very loud bangs fire was seen raging in one of the tank farms, even as the terrified residents poured into the streets watching helplessly. Virtually every resident panicked as the fire raged. They were all on their knees praying for it not to escalate.

Fire fighters however made their way to the scene at about 1 am.

A resident, who gave his name as Tony Sanni was full of praise to God that the fire did not spread. He was however quick in calling on the Lagos State government to act since people living in the area are living on a gun powder keg with the presence of the tank farms coupled with the trailers and other articulated vehicles that makes Apapa road virtually impassable.

“The government must act before a major disaster occurs. The tank farms here are nothing but a time bomb. The trailers and vehicles laden with containers makes this area nothing but a hell. This should be addressed before a major disaster occurs,” he said.
