Nigeria’s Adeyinka Samuel Elected President of Commonwealth Fencing Federatio
Nigeria has achieved a historic milestone in international sports governance as Adeyinka Samuel has been elected President of the Commonwealth Fencing Federation (CFF).
Samuel defeated incumbent Marie-France Dufour at the federation’s elective Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at Rugby School Nigeria, Atlantic City on Saturday, August 8, 2026, securing 14 votes against Dufour’s six.
This victory makes Samuel the first African and Nigerian to lead the CFF, breaking a long-standing tradition of leadership from countries such as Scotland, Australia, and Canada. His election underscores Africa’s growing influence in global fencing and marks a new era for the sport across the Commonwealth.
The election coincides with Nigeria’s hosting of the senior and veteran Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Lagos, featuring over 20 participating nations.
For the first time, U-23 and Wheelchair Fencing events will be recognized as medal-yielding competitions, further expanding inclusivity in the sport.
Delegates praised Samuel’s leadership and vision, highlighting his journey from world-class athlete to President of the Nigeria Fencing Federation. Under his stewardship, Nigeria has successfully hosted the International Fencing Federation (FIE)-sanctioned Junior World Cups and African Championships, and now proudly becomes the first African nation to stage the Senior Commonwealth Championships.
Samuel’s election represents not only a personal triumph but also a significant step forward for African representation in international sports leadership.
