Caligeo Suites Fulfils Glasgow Promise to Team Nigeria Medalists

Caligeo Suites Ibadan has fulfilled its promise to reward Team Nigeria athletes who won medals at the 23rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, in a renewed demonstration of private-sector support for Nigerian sports.

The Ibadan-based hospitality firm, led by its Chief Executive Officer, Gbolahan Fatuga, had before the Games unveiled a special incentive scheme designed to reward Nigerian athletes who mounted the podium in Glasgow.

Under the initiative, gold medalists were promised 30 nights’ accommodation, silver medalists 20 nights, while bronze medalists were entitled to 15 nights in the hotel’s standard suites.

Team Nigeria’s athletes duly delivered, with the country winning three gold, three silver and four bronze medals in athletics at the Glasgow Games.

With the promise now being honoured, the Caligeo initiative provides the medalists with an additional reward for their efforts and further highlights the important role corporate organisations can play in supporting Nigerian athletes.

Fatuga, a former athlete, had described the initiative as a deliberate attempt to encourage corporate sponsorship of Nigerian sports and create a model that other businesses and individuals could emulate.

“To foster corporate sponsorship and support for our athletes within the Nigerian business community, I propose this initiative, with Caligeo Suites serving as a benchmark for other organizations and individuals,” Fatuga said when the scheme was unveiled.

The accommodation vouchers are transferable, allowing medalists to extend the benefit to coaches, friends or family members who contributed to their success.

Fatuga explained that the decision to make the vouchers transferable was informed by the fact that some medalists may live outside Nigeria and may not be able to personally use the accommodation benefit.

“Since some of the medalists may live outside the country and may not be able to capitalize directly on this incentive, I would like to emphasize that the vouchers are transferable to their coaches, friends and family who contributed to their success and are more likely to visit Ibadan,” he said.

The digital vouchers, each carrying a unique identification number, are issued directly to the eligible medalists.

Beneficiaries transferring vouchers to friends or family members are required to provide the name of the medalist from whom the voucher was received when making a reservation.

The procedure enables Caligeo Suites’ management to verify the authenticity of each voucher and confirm the transfer with the medalist before finalising the reservation, subject to room availability.

The vouchers remain valid until December 31, 2027, giving the medalists and their beneficiaries ample time to take advantage of the reward.

Fatuga also used the initiative to reiterate his call for greater private-sector participation in sports development, stressing that the responsibility of supporting athletes should not rest solely on government and sports federations.

“Supporting athletes who represent Nigeria necessitates a collaborative effort between businesses and governmental bodies. Sole reliance on the government and sports federations is not a sustainable strategy,” he said.

He added that corporations have an opportunity to develop innovative ways of recognising and supporting athletes who bring honour to the country.

By fulfilling its Glasgow Games pledge, Caligeo Suites has moved beyond words to action, providing a practical reward for Team Nigeria’s medal-winning athletes while strengthening the case for increased corporate involvement in Nigerian sports.

The initiative also serves as a reminder that athletes’ achievements can attract meaningful support from the private sector when businesses deliberately create incentives that recognise sporting excellence.
