Caligeo Suites Unveils Gold Incentive for Team Nigeria Commonwealth Games Medalists

As Team Nigeria intensifies preparations for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, athletes have received an added boost following the launch of a special incentive scheme by Caligeo Suites Ibadan aimed at rewarding medal-winning performances.

The initiative, unveiled by the Chief Executive Officer of Caligeo Suites, Gbolahan Fatuga, is designed to encourage Nigerian athletes to strive for podium finishes while promoting greater corporate involvement in sports development.

Fatuga said the hospitality firm’s reward package should serve as a model for other businesses seeking to support Nigerian athletes beyond government funding.

“To foster corporate sponsorship and support for our athletes within the Nigerian business community, I propose this initiative, with Caligeo Suites serving as a benchmark for other organizations and individuals,” Fatuga said.

Under the scheme, Team Nigeria athletes who win medals at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow will receive accommodation vouchers redeemable at Caligeo Suites in Ibadan.

Gold medalists will receive vouchers for 30 nights’ accommodation, silver medalists will earn 20 nights, while bronze medalists will be rewarded with 15 nights in the hotel’s standard suites.

The vouchers, which are subject to room availability, will remain valid until December 31, 2027.

A former athlete himself, Fatuga explained that the incentive was deliberately made transferable, acknowledging the role played by coaches, friends and family members in an athlete’s success.

“Since some of the medalists may live outside the country and may not be able to capitalize directly on this incentive, I would like to emphasize that the vouchers are transferable to their coaches, friends and family who contributed to their success and are more likely to visit Ibadan,” he said.

Fatuga stressed that sustainable sports development requires a collaborative effort between the public and private sectors, insisting that government and sports federations cannot shoulder the responsibility alone.

“Supporting athletes who represent Nigeria necessitates a collaborative effort between businesses and governmental bodies. Sole reliance on the government and sports federations is not a sustainable strategy. Corporations have the opportunity to develop creative and innovative approaches to incentive and support our athletes,” he added.

The initiative applies exclusively to medalists at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and not to athletes who recently competed at the national trials.

The reward scheme is expected to provide extra motivation for Team Nigeria athletes as they chase gold and further underscores the growing role of private-sector investment in Nigerian sports.
