Champions League: Fenerbahce manager Kartal quits vows never to come back

Fenerbahce manager Ismail Kartal has vowed never to return to the club after resigning his position.

Kartal opted to quit following a 1-1 draw at home against Roma in a game in which irate fans threw bottles at him.

“I stepped down from my duties this evening,” Kartal – who also had a bottle thrown at him during the match – said during his post-match press conference, adding…”I made this decision to clear the way for my club. I will never come back.”

While Fenerbahce struggled at home, Bayern had a smooth ride hitting Bodo hard with an emphatic 5-0 victory at the Allianz Arena.

Bodo who impressed on their Champions League main draw debut last season, beating Manchester City, Atletico Madrid and then Inter Milan to reach the last 16 – looked to possibly be on course for another memorable European night following a goalless first half at the Allianz Arena.

Jamal Musiala – on his first start since a change in medication for a neurological condition saw him collapse twice during Bayern’s pre-season friendlies – then broke the deadlock two minutes into the second half.

England captain Harry Kane headed in from a free-kick for his 55th Champions League goal.

Alphonso Davies fired in a third and Michael Olise scored either side of Bodo/Glimt seeing Odin Bjortuft sent off late on.

In another entertaining tie, Como marked their debut in the Champions League with a 3-1 win over RB Leipzig at Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia.

Lens scored twice in stoppage time through Florian Thauvin and then Ruben Aguilar to come from behind and beat 10-man Slavia Prague 3-2.

The Czech side had seen Mikulas Konecny, on as a second-half substitute, sent off in the 48th minute for a foul on Abdallah Sima, who had been clear on goal.

Elsewhere, PSV Eindhoven and Shakhtar Donetsk drew 1-1 at the Philips Stadion.
