Commonwealth Athletes Shower Encomiums on National Sports Commission Ahead of Glasgow 2026
Team Nigeria athletes preparing for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, have showered encomiums on the National Sports Commission (NSC) for what they described as unprecedented support, quality preparation, and improved welfare ahead of the prestigious multi-sport event.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with the Special Assistant (Media) to the Director General of the National Sports Commission, Kola Daniel, Team Nigeria Captain and Paralympic Champion, Folashade Oluwafemiayo, who led the athletes in expressing their appreciation, commended the Commission for creating a conducive environment that has allowed the athletes to focus fully on their preparations.
The world record holder described the NSC’s approach as athlete-centred, noting that the timely provision of training facilities, quality kits, improved welfare packages, accommodation, medical support, and overall logistics has significantly boosted the confidence and morale of the contingent.
“We are genuinely impressed with the level of preparation. The welfare has been excellent, our training facilities have been top quality, the kits are ready, and every athlete feels valued.
“The National Sports Commission has demonstrated a genuine commitment to ensuring that Team Nigeria is adequately prepared to compete at the highest level. We sincerely appreciate the leadership of the Commission for this remarkable support,” Oluwafemiayo said.
Other members of Team Nigeria echoed the captain’s sentiments, describing the atmosphere within the camp as one filled with optimism, unity, and determination to make Nigeria proud in Glasgow.
The athletes noted that the Commission’s early planning has eliminated many of the challenges that previously affected Nigeria’s participation at major international competitions.
They pledged to reciprocate the confidence reposed on them by delivering outstanding performances and bringing home medals for the country.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games will take place in Glasgow, Scotland, from 23 July to 2 August 2026, bringing together athletes from across the Commonwealth to compete in a streamlined programme featuring ten sports and an integrated para-sport competition.
Nigeria heads into the Games as one of Africa’s leading sporting nations after an impressive outing at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Team Nigeria is expected to compete strongly across athletics, weightlifting, boxing, wrestling and para-sports, with several reigning champions and world-class athletes targeting podium finishes.
Folashade Oluwafemiayo (female) and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi (male) will captain the contingent, while the National Sports Commission has emphasized meticulous planning, early camping, athlete welfare and technical support as the pillars of the country’s medal ambitions.
